El Víbora: Four Decades of History

What did El Víbora mean for comics and for an entire generation? Founded in 1979, the magazine became one of the most important underground comics publications in Spain, giving a voice to artists who explored new ways of storytelling, transgression and portraying reality.

This exhibition traces the history of El Víbora through covers, original pages and a selection of works connected to the magazine and the Ediciones La Cúpula catalogue. From its beginnings with artists such as Nazario, Max, Miguel Gallardo and Martí to the inclusion of major names in international comics such as Charles Burns, Peter Bagge, Daniel Clowes, Hideshi Hino and Yoshihiro Tatsumi, the exhibition showcases the diversity and irreverent spirit that defined the publication.

It also features works that demonstrate the continuation of this spirit in contemporary comics, with artists such as Aroha Travé, Núria Tamarit, Anabel Colazo, Miguel Vila, Xulia Vicente and Deb JJ Lee, among many others. A look at a magazine that was much more than a publication: a space for creative freedom, dissent and experimentation that left a profound mark on comics.
