Toni Benages-Gallard and Ricard Martín Cortada are the authors of L’Altre Empordà (Editorial Finestres), a graphic novel that combines folk horror, picaresque fiction, sentimental memories of the 1990s and magical costumbrismo. Set in an Empordà far removed from the Costa Brava’s tourist image, the story follows Berta and Marc, two teenagers who, after an involuntary ritual on the night of Sant Joan, open a rift to hell and venture into a territory populated by decaying settings, a witch doctor who looks like an insurance salesman, and the ghosts of Josep Pla and Salvador Dalí.

Ricard Martín is a journalist and editorial coordinator of Time Out magazine’s gastronomy section. He also contributes to publications such as Rockdelux, Tapas Magazine and El País. He is the author of Barcelona a peu de porc (Cossetània, 2017), a chronicle and tribute to Barcelona’s traditional inns and its disappearing culinary and dining traditions, as well as the folk horror story L’Hereu Escampa, published in Branca magazine.

With L’Altre Empordà, the two authors recover the memory of a territory and a generation from before social media and mass tourism, creating a supernatural story that moves between humour, horror and a costumbrist portrait of everyday life.
